Evacuee housing options
One thing I don't understand is why there is a problem housing the Katrina evacuees. Looking at a map centered on NOLA, military bases within a radius of about 700 miles include
Alabama: 4 (5)
Arkansas: 1
Florida: 9
Georgia: 11
Illinois: 1
Kansas: 3
Kentucky: 2
Louisiana: 2 (4)
Mississippi: 2 (5)
Missouri: 2
North Carolina: 2
Oklahoma: 1
South Carolina: 4
Tennessee: 2
Texas: 11
-----
Total: 57 (# in parentheses indicates total - some were in hurricane path)
Admittedly, not all of these could take evacuees (some are logistics or naval air sites), but this is only a 700 mile radius. How many of these bases are empty or skeleton crews because of Iraq? How many empty beds are available, with full facilities (showers, medical, kitchens)? And people are being sent to the Astrodome? WTF?
